About Zagreb Botanical Garden
It was founded in 1889 when the prof. dr. A. Heinz got a task from the Royal Country Government to make scheme and to redesign the botanical garden. He made the scheme together with main gardener V. Durchanek. The redesign began in 1890 when the gardener's house was built ( today the head-master's building), and the Garden was sorrounded by a wooden fence which was later replaced by adornment, iron fence. The first ground works began in 1891, and the first planting in 1892.
The Garden was built in the so called landscape style with free groups of trees and devious alleys, but the flower orchestra is the only thing of strictly balanced lines.
Out of the construction objects in the Garden besides the greenhouse there is also the head-master's building in Succession style (the fromer gardener's house), the building of Botanical Institute (the former ecophysiological laboratory), the old exhibition pavilion (valuable, authentic object of pavilion arhitecture from 1891), the public toilet (the example of a small communal object from the end of the last century), the building of Botanical Institute which was never finished, the old repository (also from the end of a century), the engine room of the City aqueduct building ( built in the 30th), the fountain with the water for drinking, a shed for students and a small garden arbour (which was a gift for the 100th jubilee)
The Garden is a part of the Faculty of Science and many and rare sorts of plants have been growen there. The Garden consists of an arboretum, the flower orchestra, 14 greenhouses, 3 rockery and 2 artificial lakes.
Because of its educational, cultural, historical and turist value, as well as its aggregative meaning for the city of Zagreb and the Republic of Croatia, the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science is from 1971 protected by law as a natural and cultural monument (the monument of garden arhitecture).
The Garden is open to public from 1 April to 1 November. It is closed during the winter.
