About Sisak

The town of Sisak is situated south-east of Zagreb, at the meeting point of two rivers: Kupa and Sava. The geographical position and favourable natural surroundings had a strong impact on the development of the town, which is today the centre of one of Croatia's largest counties. Small statues of idols and tools are all that remained from prehistoric inhabitants. Indigenous Illyrian tribes were conquered in the 4th century by the Celts, who mixed ethnically and culturally with the Illyrian tribes and established a settlement called Segestica on the right bank of the Kupa River.

The 20th century brought industrialisation, which was particularly notable after the end of the First World War. Before the beginning of the Second World War Sisak was an important centre of river transport, metallurgy and metalworking, chemical, timber and food industries. In the very early stages of the Second World War, the local resistance fighters established a partisan unit named "the Sisak Partisan Force".

Since the end of the Second World War the town of Sisak has become one of Croatia's industrially most developed towns. Besides industry, there are many cultural institutions in Sisak, such as the Daska theatre, the cultural community centre named Kristalna kocka vedrine (The Crystal Cube of Serenity) with a cinema, public libraries, a museum etc.
