About JastrebarskoThe city of Jastrebarsko, an ancient and noble settlement, awaits the traveller with the beauty of its white and picturesque traditional garb, the treasure of its baroque-period churches, succulent dishes and its renowned wines. If the proud hawk (jastreb) is the first trademark of this city, then its second symbol is surely the green leaf of the grape vine that has over the centuries melded with the sunny slopes and hillsides of Plešivica, the "beautiful maiden with curly blue locks, whose head rests in the stone lap of Okić town" (Vlado Vlaisavljević). Jastrebarsko is situated 20 kilometres southwest of Zagreb; 16,765 people live on its territory, in 59 smaller and larger settlements, covering an area of 229 square kilometres. The city's development is based on a preserved environment, the production of health foods and excellent wines, trades and small businesses, and above all on tourism and visits by gourmets, hikers, hunters and fishers on excursions. The most important cultural monuments in the central urban settlement, Jastrebarsko, are the Erdödy palace, the Cistercian monastery with its church of Saint Mary, a site of annual parish fêtes, and the parish church of Saint Nicolas. The municipal museum and gallery, located in the old city council hall, erected in 1826, are a singular mirror of the history and culture of our ancient and noble city and its environs. Of attractive excursion centres the popular Mladina deserves to be mentioned, with the celebrated cellars of the Erdödy counts built in 1730, the famous motocross track, Croatia's oldest sleighing route on Plesivica, the Olympic swimming pool in Sveta Jana and the popular hiker's cottage on mount Japetic. The city of Jastrebarsko, happily untouched by aggressive industrialisation and free of smokestacks, with its urban and rural traditions and untouched natural beauties, is surely one of the brightest jewels in the crown of free, democratic and sovereign Croatia.
